12.20.11 - We struggled ourselves for years with the same
issue until just recently we found a solution. We are posting to our
TechTools Knowledge base for our customers who may
be experiencing the same problem printing shipping labels to a thermal printer
from ups.com or fedex.com website in Internet Explorer 32 bit.
Our Scenario:
Using Windows 7-64 bit, which most new computers come with now, cannot
print ups or fedex shipping labels using a thermal printer in Internet Explorer
(IE) 32bit version. IE 64 bit still has bugs we feel and it locks up a
computer constantly although you can print labels from the 64bit IE, a real
catch 22.
Also the problem with IE 64 bit is that Norton, at the
time of this writing, does not have support for the Norton Toolbar for Identity
Safe (password protection) in the 64 bit version, only the 32 bit version if IE.
To get around this and make sure we were protected while online, we had to close
the 32 bit version of IE and open a 64 bit version every single time when we
needed to print UPS labels, a real pain.
Through our relentless passion to resolve technical
issues, we found the solution for this problem. Hope it helps someone else out
there.
The problem: Cannot print shipping labels
to thermal printer (or any printer for that matter), from UPS.com or fedex.com
website from Internet Explorer 32 bit version on a 64 bit operating
system (Windows 7 in this case).
The Solution: We struggled with this for
years and finally figured it out after many calls to UPS level 2 support.
Although is appears to make no logical sense, it certainly corrected the problem
for us right away. A REAL fix for a change. This solution is for UPS but
it may also work for FedEx but the steps might be a little different.
Before proceeding, you must make sure you have the
proper printer drivers installed for your thermal printer
from this UPS article here. If you are printing to a regular printer, make
sure those drivers are installed correctly.
1. Login to your UPS account at
www.ups.com as you
normally would.
2. Select the Shipping
tab
3. Select the Set
Preferences link
4. Select the View/Edit
link next to Quantum View Notify
5. Add
"~UPSPrinterApplet~" (without the "quotes") to
the first line of Email Message text field.
Note:
The customer may still use the email field for Quantum View Notifies. The
customer's message should be typed after the "~UPSPrinerApplet~". The
applet section will not appear in the message and does not count against the
character limit.
