Internet Firewalls

What is a Firewall?
A system designed to prevent unauthorized access to or from a private network. Firewalls can be implemented in both hardware and software, or a combination of both. Firewalls are frequently used to prevent unauthorized Internet users from accessing private networks connected to the Internet, especially intranets. All messages entering or leaving the intranet pass through the firewall, which examines each message and blocks those that do not meet the specified security criteria.

There are several types of firewall techniques:
  • Packet filter: Looks at each packet entering or leaving the network and accepts or rejects it based on user-defined rules. Packet filtering is fairly effective and transparent to users, but it is difficult to configure. In addition, it is susceptible to IP spoofing.
  • Application gateway: Applies security mechanisms to specific applications, such as FTP and Telnet servers. This is very effective, but can impose a performance degradation.
  • Circuit-level gateway: Applies security mechanisms when a TCP or UDP connection is established. Once the connection has been made, packets can flow between the hosts without further checking.
  • Proxy server: Intercepts all messages entering and leaving the network. The proxy server effectively hides the true network addresses.
  • How do I get Firewall Protection?
    HARDWARE:
If you have a cable modem or a DSL Router (not modem) you basically have a firewall. The built in mechanism that scrambles the IP address in these devices accomplishes the same thing as a stand alone firewall device.

SOFTWARE:  There are also software firewall programs that can protect you, however the configuration of these programs can be a little tricky. You may want to get professional assistance (of course we can help you) before trying to do this yourself. If anything software firewall programs protect you too well. Right out of the box the default settings are too high. If the software vendors would lower these settings a notch, customers would not get so frustrated when it attempts to block programs and utilities that they want to use.

Can I have too much firewall protection?
YES. This is a very common mistake made by internet users. They will have 2 or more firewalls turned on at the same time.

The problem is that it will start blocking everything making it very frustrating to search the internet.

For example, Windows has a built in firewall, your Internet security software such as Nortons, AVG, McAfee etc has a firewall and your router by its true nature also has a firewall. You need only ONE of these not all 3. Pick one stick with it and your internet experience will be much faster.
