 When replacing a hard drive
there are many things to consider, primarily your data. All data including
address books, documents, favorites, email, absolutely everything you have on
your computer is stored on the computer's hard drive. So when it comes time to
replace your hard drive you want to make sure this is done by a professional.
Adding a second hard
drive:
Often times if you are simply running out of space, you can add a second
hard drive in your system. The original <C> drive will remain in tact (assuming
that are no problems with it) functioning as the "master" and the secondary
drive can be installed as a "slave" drive <D>. This is usually done as a measure
to buy more time as a computer gets older or as an
upgrade. On an older system the BIOS may not recognize today's larger hard
drive sizes.
For example your 4 year old
computer may only recognize up to a certain size due to limitations of the
motherboard etc. You could install a second drive but regardless of the size
(40, 60, 80G etc) it will only recognize up to the maximum that the BIOS will
support.

"Replacing a hard
drive is really easier than you think.
The most challenging part
is transferring your data...the hardware is simple" |
Data Transfer:
Something to consider when you are replacing a hard drive of course, is your data.
This is something highly disregarded or not taken seriously when changing
a hard drive. NTI can help you move
all of your data from your old PC to your new one as part of the build process.
(We highly encourage all of our customers to perform a full backup before bring
any computer in for repair. More on backing up)
Data is the
Customer's Responsibility:
Whether you are adding a a second drive, or transferring data to a new hard
drive it is the full responsibility of the customer to make sure they have a
full backup of their data. This is another highly disregarding task which
usually ends up as data loss because people do not back up their data.
Procrastination is the worst enemy when it comes to backing up...."I will do it
next week" or "I have a backup on my hard drive". Keep in mind that if the hard
drive goes so does your data. This also holds true when dropping off your data
for repair. Take time to learn about backing up...you
will be very glad you did.
Noisy Hard Drive:
This is
indicative of physical damage and data loss may occur. At the first sign of any
noise inside your machine you should stop and call us right away. Once the
component gets to the point where it is making noise the damage is usually done.
Remember that the damage started long before your perception of the problem, the
noise. The biggest mistake people make is that they ignore it thinking that it
will go away. The hard drive locks up and all data becomes unrecoverable.
Don't let this happen to you, be proactive not reactive and call us.
