Windows Vista includes a whole new backup tool called "Backup
Status & Configuration", which does not support BKF-backups
made with NTBackup as used in Windows XP. The new Vista
backup utility is also limited to making only backups of certain
file types and folders. It has REMOVED the capability of selecting your
own individual files for backing up. It only offers backup criteria
based on broad categories such as, documents, pictures, etc. This is
great for the novice but for even slightly advanced users it is a huge
nuisance.
Microsoft has released this
Windows NT Restore Utility,
which allows Windows Vista to RESTORE (only) files
saved in BKF format. You cannot backup using this MS utility, only restore
from a BKF file from a Windows XP machine to a Vista machine.
If you are now using Windows Vista but wish to continue using the tried
and true NTBackup utility as used in XP, this procedure explains how to
do that.
Create a new
folder on Windows
Vista
called. C:\Program
Files\NTBackup
and copy the following files from a Windows XP machine to the folder:
-
C:Windows\System32\NTBackup.exe
-
C:Windows\System32\Ntmsapi.dll
-
C:Windows\System32\Vssapi.dll
-
C:Windows\Help\NTBackup.chm
-
C:Windows\Help\NTBackup.hlp
IMPORTANT NOTES
· To
run the Restore Utility or
NTBackup
on Windows Vista,
you have to enable Removable Storage Management, or else one will
get an NTSMAPI.dll error.
-
Open Control Panel and under "Programs and
Features" click "Turn Windows Features on or off"
-
Enable "Removable Storage Management" and
press OK
Before doing backup disable Volume Shadow
Copy or it will not work (you will get a 'shadow copy error'). See illustration below. Same is true
whether running in Wizard mode or Advanced mode. Look for the option
when setting up your backup routine.
You have to do this each time you backup. Not sure if it
saves on a scheduled backup, will test and update this page.
