How to fix Quick Parts not saving in Outlook 2007

Problem: When in Outlook 2007 and you save Quick Parts (aka 'Building Blocks') your changes save but after you reboot they disappear. The issue seems to be associated with the NormalEmail.dotm word template that is associated with outlook. There is no known fix for it as of Jul 2008 however below is a workaround in the interim .

Fix: Solve it by deleting NormalEmail.dotm, logged in as Administrator and it will create a new one following the steps below.

  1. Close Outlook 2007

  2. Locate normailEmail.dotm by using one of the methods below.

    a) Copy the following into the address bar of MyComputer and hit enter. <%appdata%\Microsoft\Templates> less '<>' brackets

    b) In Vista, change VIEW settings in MyComputer to Show Hidden Files. Then browse to <C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates>

  3. Delete (or rename to .OLD) NormalEmail.dotm (outlook will create a new one in a moment)

  4. Then start Outlook 2007 by using "Run as Administrator" command (must do it this way or it will not work).

    a) RIGHT click on Outlook icon from QuickLaunch bar to get this option above. (Turn ON Quick Launch [right click no START menu] and add or drag Outlook shortcut to QuickLaunch so icon shows).

    b) Outlook opens. Create ALL of the Quick Parts you want (must do all now, explanation below)

  5. Restart Outlook normally. A new NormalEmail.dotm is created and quick parts should now save even after reboot.

Tech Notes:

  • Have no idea why you cannot continue to save from this point consistently but you cannot it seems. Can not identify the common denomonator sometimes it does sometimes it does not. Whichever Quick Parts you saved in steps 1-5 above will be the only ones that will save after you reboot. To add more QP you will have to create them ALL again using these steps. Hopefully Microsoft will find a post a fix for this, if so we will add it here on this page. Bookmark this page for future reference.
