Traveling and Internet
Connecting to the Internet when you are on
the road traveling is a lot less frustrating than it used to be. High
speed internet is available almost anywhere you go now, so connecting to the
internet when traveling has never been easier. Understanding a few things will help you get
connected to high speed internet the next time you are on the road.
First of all, dial up is dead. The old days of dial up connections
are long over so forget about dialup connections and read on. If you are
traveling with a laptop it will have a built in high speed internet port
which is all you need.
High Speed Internet
Different Types of High Speed Connections
There are only two types of internet
connections:
Hardwired:
Which means you are connecting a physical cable form your laptop to a high
speed jack in the wall.
- If you are traveling and want to get
on the internet pack your own CAT5 ethernet cable or network cable as
its called. This is easiest as you will have everything you need with
you. If you can bring at least a 20' cable if you are uncertain of the
environment you will be in. You will be glad you had a nice long cable
if the internet jack of the place you are staying is on the other side
of the room.
- If you forget, or don't have an
internet cable and you are staying at a hotel, they will usually loan
you one, just ask at the front desk.
- If you are at a friends house and they
don't have one, any local office store such as Best Buy, Staples,
Radio Shack etc will stock them.
- For this type of connection a cable is
all you will need.
- Open
you regular browser such as Internet Explorer and you will get online.
- If you are staying at a hotel, usually
you will automatically be
redirected to the Hotels custom login page for security purposes. Click
your way through authentication, and you will go right online.
Wireless:
Which means you will connect to the wireless internet router at the hotel or
your friends house...through the air.
- To connect wirelessly you will need 2
things: A laptop with a built in wireless network card which most
do now, and to be within range of a wireless internet connection which is
usually a wireless router.
- If you are staying at a hotel,
sometimes the connection is automatic, and other times you will have to
connect through their "gateway" for security purposes. This
usually a custom login page for the hotel.
- Open
you regular browser such as Internet Explorer.
- Click your way through authentication,
and you will go right online.
Accessing Email When Traveling
Once you are connected to the internet,
open your email as you normally would.
