QuadStation-i7 Multiple Screen Computers:

Get past the hype and listen to the facts from the pros.

MYTH #1:
A common misconception is that trading platforms will run better on an older DUAL core or Xeon processor rather than the latest technology of the Intel QUAD Core i7 which is up to 8 times faster. The Intel Six core processors are 12 times faster.

FACT:
Not true, nor does it make any sense. It is very simple...the faster your processor the faster your overall system speed will be. Dual processors are old technology, Quad core processors are the future...you decide. See actual screenshot at the bottom of this page of TradeStation running our QuadStation 8 System with a QUAD core processor.

MYTH #2:
Stock trading software will not use more than 2 CPU cores, nor benefit from multi threaded processing.

FACT:
Absolutely not true. ALL stock trading platforms benefit from quad core processors and WILL run your charts faster than a dual core or Xeon processor. Don't take our word for it, here is what Intel says: "Even if the applications are not multi-threaded, multi-tasking environments will benefit from multi-core processors." (Source: Intel Software Solutions Group)

It is true that a single threaded software application will not utilize multi threading. However, Windows 7, Windows XP and Windows Vista all support multi-threading so your overall system performance will benefit substantially with multi-threading speed. Also, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook etc) applications are fully multi-thread capable.

Also see Intel's Turbo Boost Technology article.

MYTH #3:
Another misconception from the rumor mill is that overclocking a processor is a good thing.

FACT:
Nothing could be further from the truth. Intel states very clearly in all documentation and on their website that if their processors are overclocked it voids the Intel warranty. Why would you want to do this?

  • It over heats the processor shortening the lifespan by 50%!

  • It VOIDS the processor warranty and motherboard warranty!

How can you tell if you are being fooled? By the Ghz of the processor being represented. For example there is no such Intel processor as a a 3.5, 3.8 or 4Ghz processor. This will tell you right away if a company is overclocking and overheating their processors if they are advertising processors in this range. The fastest processor on the planet is the Intel Quad-i7 Core 3.2Ghz, there is nothing faster.

Here is why you should NOT have an overclocked processor.

MYTH #4
The higher the GHz of my processor, the faster my system will be.

FACT:
Not true. In the past measuring processor speed was all about the Ghz, or clock speed. In the past few years that measurement has become virtually obsolete as the microarchitecture of processors has advanced to a much higher level. Now, CPU speed is measured more by how many CORES are on the chip not so much about the clock speed of one core.

Today, it is More about the CORE. More cores = more speed, it is that simple. You cannot compare a 3Ghz Dual core processor to a 3Ghz Quad core processor. More Details>>>.

MYTH #5
The more memory I have, the faster my system will be.

FACT:
Not necessarily. Prior to quad and six core processors memory played a much larger part in overall system speed. But now memory is not as much of a contributing factor as the type of processor in your system. So if you want your system to be fast, of course you want a Quad or Six Core processor (read above).

Although memory is important it is not nearly as important as how much core processing power you have in a system. Also Windows XP 32 bit only recognizes a maximum of 3g of memory in any system. Vista recognizes up to 4G max.If you want more memory than 4g upgrade to Windows 7 64Bit edition, it will recognize 12G, 24G and more memory!

For more details on Windows memory limitations,  see NTI Article #KB60914

The Future of Technology:
The future of processing technology will surely utilize QUAD and SIX Core processing as the new standard. If you are in the market for a new computer system you most definitely want to include the latest technology to ensure you are 'Future Ready'. Dual core processors will soon become obsolete as Quad and Six core processors have taken the lead with speed.
